Quick Math

So Bob Klapisch is all over the Wilpons for letting Reyes walk without any sort of fight or attempt to sign him:

I'm not surprised about that "stuff," but what about the tidbit about the Mets drawing 4 million fans in 2008? Didn't they play in that now-departed Shea Stadium? Yes, yes they did. So 4,000,000 (attending fans) divided by 81 (home games) leaves us with 49,000+. The new stadium (Citi Field) doesn't come close to a capacity of 49,000 (it caps at 41,800 or 45,000 depending on how you count). Wasn't Citi Field supposed to be for the fans AND for making the team more profitable? Tsk tsk.

  1. I believe one of the Wilpons also stated they lost something in the realm of 70 million last year. That's without accounting for anything related to Madoff. That number is mind boggling for a NY team if true.

Citifield is a disaster IMO, it is too small in regards to seats and too large in regards to field. They also kind of forgot it was the Mets and not the Dodgers playing there when they were designing it.

The Mets should have traded Reyes during last season and at least gotten some decent prospects for him, that was their real mistake. They knew they couldn't sign him so there was no need to pretend. Now they're left with nothing in return for him.

I think they need to bottom out. Trade Wright, and all the other veterans they can for prospects and be really terrible for a few years, clear salary space and gain prospects and hopefully rebound in a few years.

Oh, and they need new ownership for sure. What's Mark Cuban doing?
